Install it on any snapshot or service-pack of Windows XP you may have (and with which it is compatible by the author's lights), run it for awhile, then go to the Control Panel applet and turn it off (but don't uninstall it). What happens? Your graphic image files will lose their application-specific icons in all views except Thumbnail View (some immediately, some after you have modified them either singly or in batches). JPEGs tend to revert to the icon for Windows Picture & Fax Viewer, while others like PNG, GIF and TIF go generic altogether. The registry doesn't forget your file associations, but XT continues to give it temporary amnesia, as to how the default icon for a PNG for example meant to open in XnView should look, for as long as it remains installed. Call it a quasi-service, call it anything you like, but if you're not inclined to uninstall it when you're tired of watching it do its thing, then look for something else to draw icons-from-life like XT does.
